This image represents all the 'main characters': Myself, Maestro, The Watchman, Old Frog-Eyes, Mother Ayahuasca, The River, and Death. It was done in a more graphic style, to give it a certain dynamic edge that 'reads' well at a small size.

While I was writing 'AYAHUASCA!' there was a looming concern: What kind of cover art should it have? The pressure was making me draw a blank, because that single image was to seriously impact the book's chance at success!

I was really stuck on the issue for months, until one night I had the strange idea "Why not try asking Mother?". I lit a stick of insence and trailed smoke around the whole apartment while mentally inviting Mother, to help me with inspiration. After sitting around for a while to no effect, I eventually headed out to grab a burrito. Just a few minutes along the sidewalk, my thoughts finally turned away from "coming up with an idea" and that's when this image struck me, in complete clarity, like a bolt of lightning. I came running home to sketch it out, and forgot all about dinner as I spent the night working on it.
